A case converter that knows the style rules
Most case converters capitalize every word and call it title case. That is how you end up with headlines like "How To Build A Website In A Weekend", which no editor would sign off on. This case converter applies real title case rules: articles, short conjunctions and prepositions stay lowercase unless they open or close the headline, words after a colon are capitalized, hyphenated compounds are handled, and acronyms such as SEO, NASA or iPhone are left alone.
How to use it
- Paste your text on the left. Each line converts separately, so you can fix a whole list of blog titles, menu labels or column names in one go.
- Pick a case. The result updates live as you edit the input.
- For headlines, choose Chicago (lowercases all prepositions, the common book and blog style) or AP (lowercases only prepositions of three letters or fewer, the newsroom style).
- Copy the result, or press Use as input to chain conversions.
Input: the complete guide to self-hosting your SEO tools on a budget Chicago: The Complete Guide to Self-Hosting Your SEO Tools on a Budget AP: The Complete Guide to Self-Hosting Your SEO Tools on a Budget Sentence: The complete guide to self-hosting your SEO tools on a budget camelCase: theCompleteGuideToSelfHostingYourSeoToolsOnABudget kebab: the-complete-guide-to-self-hosting-your-seo-tools-on-a-budget
Chicago and AP agree here. Try "working with clients from abroad" and they split: Chicago gives "Working with Clients from Abroad", AP gives "Working With Clients From Abroad".
Title case vs sentence case for headings
Title case looks formal and works for book titles, article headlines and email subject lines that need to stand out. Sentence case is easier to read, makes proper nouns stand out, and avoids arguments about whether "Into" needs a capital. Google's own design guidelines, along with GOV.UK and most product teams, use sentence case for headings, buttons and navigation. Pick one style for the whole site and stick to it. Mixed heading styles are one of the quickest tells of a rushed build.
Programming cases explained
- camelCase: JavaScript variables and functions, JSON keys (
firstName). - PascalCase: classes, types and React components (
PricingTable). - snake_case: Python, Ruby and SQL column names (
created_at). - CONSTANT_CASE: constants and environment variables (
API_BASE_URL). - kebab-case: CSS classes, file names and URLs (
hero-banner.webp).
The converter splits words on spaces, punctuation and existing case changes, so getHTTPResponse, get_http_response and Get HTTP response all convert cleanly into each other. If you are renaming keys in a payload, tidy the result in the JSON formatter.
How to write a good URL slug
The slug is the readable part of a URL after the domain, such as /blog/best-cafes-zurich. It shows in search results, in shared links and in your analytics, so it is worth thirty seconds of thought. The slug generator lowercases everything, turns accented letters into plain ones (é to e, ü to u, ß to ss), swaps & for "and", strips punctuation and joins words with hyphens. Turn on Remove stop words to drop filler like "a", "the" and "of", and set a maximum length so it trims at a whole word rather than mid-word.
Common slug mistakes
- Putting dates or years in evergreen URLs. "best-cafes-zurich-2026" looks stale next year, and changing it means a redirect.
- Leaving accents and spaces in. They get percent-encoded into strings like
caf%C3%A9; the URL encoder shows exactly what browsers do to them. - Changing a slug after launch without a 301 redirect. The old URL keeps its backlinks and rankings only if it redirects to the new one.
- Stuffing keywords. One clear phrase is enough. Google reads the page, not just the URL.
Frequently asked questions
What words should not be capitalized in a title?
Articles (a, an, the), coordinating conjunctions (and, but, or, nor, for, so, yet) and short prepositions (at, by, in, of, on, to) stay lowercase, unless they are the first or last word. AP style only lowercases prepositions of three letters or fewer, so it capitalizes With and From, while Chicago style lowercases them.
What is the difference between title case and sentence case?
Title case capitalizes the major words, as in How to Choose a Web Host. Sentence case capitalizes only the first word and proper nouns, as in How to choose a web host. Many brands and style guides, including Google's, now prefer sentence case for headings and buttons because it reads faster.
Should URL slugs use hyphens or underscores?
Use hyphens. Google treats a hyphen as a word separator, so best-running-shoes is read as three words, while underscores can join words together. Hyphens are also the convention in WordPress, Shopify and most CMS platforms.
How long should a URL slug be?
Short enough to read at a glance, usually three to five meaningful words and under about 60 characters. Drop filler words, dates and anything likely to change, so the URL can stay the same when you update the page.
When do developers use camelCase, snake_case and kebab-case?
camelCase is the norm for JavaScript variables and JSON keys, PascalCase for classes and React components, snake_case for Python and database columns, CONSTANT_CASE for constants and environment variables, and kebab-case for CSS classes, file names and URLs.
